Is the Bigger Pack Really Cheaper? Atta, Rice, Oil, Sugar and Tea Compared
"Buy the big pack, it works out cheaper" is the oldest rule in household shopping. It is usually true, but not always, and the exceptions are worth knowing. Using today's prices, we compared each brand's smallest and largest pack of the main staples by price per kilogram or litre.
Why can a bigger pack cost more per kg? Three common reasons. The large size may be a different product line (a premium rice in the 5 kg bag, an everyday one in the 1 kg). A rigid bottle or tin costs more to make than a pouch, and you pay for it. And small packs are often the ones stores put on promotion, because shoppers notice them. That is why we show both packs by name: you can see exactly what is being compared and judge for yourself.
The practical rule: always divide the price by the weight. The product pages on this site do it for you, showing the price per kg or litre next to every store's price.
Today's comparison
What the data shows today: of 28 brand comparisons, the bigger pack is cheaper per kg or litre in 13 and dearer in 10. Cooking oil is the clearest exception: for 7 of the 10 oil brands, the big bottle or tin costs more per litre than the 1-litre pouch, because you also pay for the rigid container. For tea, salt and atta the large packs usually win by a wide margin.
